Information on Old Powhatan School
The former school building is owned by the Powhatan Point Revitalization Association, a nonprofit organization established in 2012 to purchase the property from the Board of Education of the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District. The association is now defunct, and only one board member is believed to be living. Because of this and the fact an operating agreement or other governing documents cannot be located, there is limited guidance on how ownership interests or authority within the association should be handled.
The Powhatan Point Revitalization Association currently owes $2,322.06 in delinquent property taxes. The Village’s understanding is that the association has no available funds to satisfy this obligation. It is also our understanding that property taxes were paid in previous years by another entity, which subsequently filed a lien against the property.
The Village is currently working with the Belmont County Landbank to pursue options that could lead to foreclosure of the property and eventual demolition of the building. The Landbank has several potential avenues available, and we remain in regular communication with its representatives to determine the most effective path forward.
While this process is expected to take time, we are encouraged that assistance from the Belmont County Landbank is now available and are grateful for their partnership as we work toward addressing this long-standing issue.
