Old Dilapidated Buildings

The council just wants you to know that we are working on trying to get buildings torn down.

There is a procedure we must go through to get properties on our county Land Bank list for possible demolition.

If the owner pays the property tax we can’t touch it.  If the taxes haven’t been paid the property will be waiting to go to title.

After a clear title is found the property can be listed for the sheriff’s sale.

If no one buys it, then it can be considered for the Land Bank demolition.

Information on Old Powhatan School

Some people are asking why the town can’t do anything about the old Powhatan School. The town has nothing to do with that property and it seems that the Powhatan Point Revitalization Association is still paying the taxes on it.

Many years ago when the voters were being informed about the bond issue to build new schools, the school board brought a meeting to our old auditorium and we were promised that the school district had allocated money ($300,000) for the removal of the old school.

Unfortunately the school was sold to the Powhatan Point Revitalization Association and now we have the mess we have.

New Nuisance Ordinance in Effect

We’ve always had an ordinance that stated you couldn’t keep junk vehicles on your property and your grass has to be cut but in the last few months the council has instituted a new drive to try to clean up Powhatan.  As a council we want to help you in anyway to clean up your property.  If you have a junk vehicle that you want to get rid of, please just stop down at the City Building and the front desk will give you the name and number of a fellow who will remove them for you at no cost to you.  If you see lawns that haven’t been tended (like the old Frosty Treat property), please know that we have been trying to first of all, find the owners and secondly get them to keep their grass mowed.  Sometimes property is owned by an LLC and we are searching for real people whom we can deal with.
